Rizhao Lunan Seaside National Forest Park: (日照鲁南海滨国家森林公园)

This national park has many things to do so you will likely need two or three days to take in most of the sites. Located on a long stretch of golden sandy beach that is lined with hotels and restaurants you can enjoy parasailing, rent beach bikes and swim in the Yellow Sea.

The five star hotel I stayed at had a huge balcony over looking the beach and sea but it certainly wasn’t very good quality. Next visit I plan to stay in the unique little Mongolian style huts that are equipped with queen beds, their own bathroom and air conditioning for 50-80 RMB per night.

Rent an electric car or horse drawn carriage and drive around the resort and visit their little animal zoo, small lakes, forest walks, flower gardens and park restaurants. If you’re lucking catch the dancing bears in their mini circus. You might also consider visiting during the sand castle competition which is held in July and August.

Dragon Mountain Temple: (龙山寺)

Dragon Mountain or Longshan Temple was built by the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907AD) to serve the flourishing Buddhism of the time. For more than 1300 years Buddhist pilgrims traveled here to pray, worship and receive blessings. When you visit you may get the chance to talk with a Buddhist monk staying at the temple.

Of course the original structures were destroyed during war but have been rebuilt and still serve as a religious site for pilgrims. The architecture includes the several halls, the grand gate and a bell tower. There are also many life size brass sculptures of warriors placed throughout the forest on the road up to and surrounding the temple. It is said they continue to protect the temple to this day.
